[It’s been a long few days since the Kin’corrans went “home”; Mia doesn’t remember most of them. Since the 31st she’s been, for the most part, sound asleep in the battledome clinic, trying to recover from…well, everything. Dealing with the fire didn’t help, leaving her spent and dehydrated and coughing. The time she’s spent awake, though, convinced her that things in the village were getting back to normal.

So her first mission of the day, after waking and sorting herself out, is to find something to do that will alleviate this boredom and, just perhaps, help make her case for just going home to lie about there instead.]

I know it has been very difficult and busy in the village just recently. Given the date, it will only stay busy. If it is at all possible, though, I would ask a small favor: would anyone be willing to bring a few books from the library to the battle dome clinic? I promise to return them at the first opportunity. …Once I’m done with them, that is.

While I am thinking about it…well, I would not mind a little company either. I want to hear that everyone is all right.

Mm. I studied abroad before I came back to Luceti. I had to learn to make new friends when I went, or it would have been lonely.

Ah...what does "studied abroad" mean? Is that like traveling?

Mm. It's going to school in another country for awhile, to learn the language and customs and experience that type of traveling and living.

I see. It sounds very interesting, but it must take you a long time to get to a country far enough away.

It's about thirteen hours on an airplane. It seems incredibly fast when you think about how far the plane travels in that time, but it can seem very long while you're sitting in your seat.

It's a type of craft that flies through the air. It has enough power to keep its altitude instead of falling back to the ground.

Oh! So it's like the ship, but without an outside source of...energy.

That's right; the fuel for its energy is carried with it.

It sounds fascinating. The closest thing we have to that is...well, the only one of its kind and it needs an Adept to make it fly.

An adept skilled in magic? I can't think of many people who could handle something as large as a airplane, even so. It must be incredible!

An Adept is someone like me who can use Psynergy. I don't know how large an airplane is, but we managed to make the ship fly once the wings were attached.

Eh? 'Psynergy'... Could you mean psionic energy? Or psychic energy? [Not that these are particularly extremely different...]

Psynergy is the general name for the abilities of an Adept of any of the four elements. My healing and ice and water "powers" are Psynergy.

Where do those powers come from? [For example, she calls on her planet and the water around her. With Mia, could it be something completely innate?]

We are born with them. Those who are not cannot see us use them, either.

The effects of your powers should still be observable, so what do they believe causes them?

Most of those outside my village who "witnessed" one of us using it were just surprised and confused.

...In Imil, everyone knows I'm a descendant of the Mercury Clan, so they assumed that when strange things happened, that was the reason.

Could you tell me more about the Mercury Clan?

I don't know very much, other than that our duty is to protect Mercury Lighthouse. [A duty which she failed spectacularly. Good thing that was the right choice.] I'm fairly sure it was a line of Adepts, though - my parents and my cousin had these abilities too.

Mercury Lighthouse? What sort of place is it? [She really shouldn't be asking so many questions - it's a bit rude, isn't it? - but she can't help it. The curiosity about something so similar to things important to her is too strong.]

It is a somewhat sacred tower that houses the beam that comes from the Mercury Star; when all of the lighthouses are lit, Alchemy is unleashed in the world. It may be that at one time, the beacon also served the purpose of an ordinary lighthouse, to guide ships to shore safely, but it has been unlit for decades.

Amazing. In my home, they're only ordinary lighthouses. There aren't any like that at all.

[Though a part of it strikes a chord somewhere inside her - not a memory, not even those vague feelings of the past life, but the simple fact that Mercury would be star of Knowledge, just as its soldier is the solder of Intellect.]

...In a sense, yes. Something like that. It is a very long story and one I don't quite feel fit to tell at the moment.
