[It’s been a long few days since the Kin’corrans went “home”; Mia doesn’t remember most of them. Since the 31st she’s been, for the most part, sound asleep in the battledome clinic, trying to recover from…well, everything. Dealing with the fire didn’t help, leaving her spent and dehydrated and coughing. The time she’s spent awake, though, convinced her that things in the village were getting back to normal.

So her first mission of the day, after waking and sorting herself out, is to find something to do that will alleviate this boredom and, just perhaps, help make her case for just going home to lie about there instead.]

I know it has been very difficult and busy in the village just recently. Given the date, it will only stay busy. If it is at all possible, though, I would ask a small favor: would anyone be willing to bring a few books from the library to the battle dome clinic? I promise to return them at the first opportunity. …Once I’m done with them, that is.

While I am thinking about it…well, I would not mind a little company either. I want to hear that everyone is all right.

It may be even easier to find actors here because it does require two skilled fighters and that was why the Royal Academy sought Bracers.

The people here are more fighters than not, aren't they? I've met very few who do not use weapons in some way.

Me too! When I first came here there was snow all over. I didn't have any time to enjoy it though.

They truly are, and some are very skilled as well. I was definitely impressed with the level of talent I saw on the missions and drafts I've been on.

[Cayla nods, although Mia can't see this.] Yes. It would be good if there was nothing to be upset about, but it would be better to try to fix the situation than hurt eachother.

Sometimes. [ Gently, still. ] Mia, you're an amazing healer... I mean, you saved my life! But... you push yourself so much to help people.

Do you think so? I know there have been two instances where I have exhausted myself...and I don't think, under the circumstances, they were terribly irresponsible as much as they were...miscalculations.

[Here she folds her hands, to avoid fisting them.]

Xion, I was taught and trained not to exhaust myself. To know my own limits and do everything that I could within them, except in serious emergencies - and even then, depending on the situation. I like to think that I still know those limits. That I know when to rest and that I try to take my own advice about such things.

[There is a heavy weight labeled Duty that feels like it's pressing down on her heart, now. The kind that comes with failing it.]

Maybe I haven't learned as well as I thought.

[Ami, used to technology - and fending for herself at home with an absent father and busy mother growing up - only smiles and says nothing to embarrass Mia further.]

In that sort of situation, too, then.

... sometimes it's hard, though. Isn't it? To take your own advice... you want to help other people and make them rest, but you feel like... you should keep going, sometimes. [ General "you," here. Xion, too, is looking down, thoughtful. But after a moment she raises her gaze to Mia. She can see how hard the other girl is taking this. ]

... you work really hard, Mia. I don't know if it's too much or not. I think you're right; only you can know that. But... maybe it would help to stop a little more often. Not stop helping, just... stop and make sure it's okay for you to keep going. I know what it's like to get caught up in wanting to help.

[One of the reasons she is having such a hard time is that she knows she doesn't do this to herself. The time before this, it came about as the result of the draft in space, and the serious strain of the environment and the battle; this time, it happened in part because of the physical effects of helping put out a fire.

In the clinic, or even in her previous drafts, this hasn't happened before. Has it? Of course she takes her responsibilities seriously.

And yet. Xion is not the first person today to give her a talk of sorts about pushing herself. She can't forget that, even as she has trouble comprehending what exactly it is she might need to change. Her own voice in her head tells her that she goes home for dinner unless they're shorthanded or very full, she takes breaks, she tries not to do too much if she feels tired-

Do the words mean anything if she is the one using them to comfort herself? Mia closes her eyes for a long moment; when they open again, she manages a tired smile.]

Of course. Thank you, Xion. I apologize for worrying you.

Let's enjoy it this year, then. Do you know how to skate?

[Oh, yours too? Norma returns the grin and pulls up a chair to sit. Now that the pleasantries are over, she has to get down to real business.]

What happened, anyway? I mean...to wind up with you being in here.

[My, it seems to be an apple pie sort of day.

Grune stops to consider what's been left out. It does look very good, but she wouldn't want someone else to come along and not be able to have any because she had eaten their slice.

...Maybe she'll have the smallest one.

She sets down her own contribution of, well, apple pie and looks around for a fork.]

Last week was very strenuous. Then...there was a fire, and between the Psynergy drain and the smoke and heat I...knew I could use some rest, when it was over.

[The explanation is a little different every time, but she strives for as much of the truth as she can. This is pretty much it.]

I'm all right, I promise. [And she's not a woman to take or make promises lightly.]

No, I've never even heard of skate before now. Is it fun? [Never even heard of 'skate'. What is sport, how do.]

Yes! It is a little bit difficult to learn at first, but once you can balance it's great. But you need a frozen lake with thick enough ice...or the rooms on the other side of this building, I suppose.

[~~Wait Grune brought a pie too?~~ There are forks nearby, most definitely. Mia did tell Tsuzuki that it had to be shared.

The smell of fresh baked goods might be enough to bring her around in a minute or two.]

[She was no quicker at catching on to the technology around the clinic, but at least with this much practice she pretty much has it down by now.]

It's comforting to have made friends here.

I think we all learned something from this, at least. [Even if, for some, the lesson was "learn to keep your mouth shut".]

Then I don't think you would have a problem finding some for a performance. Even if that is not what ends up happening, I think we could all use something a little less serious.

As long as they are capable of acting. There are definitely lines to memorize.

Mm. I studied abroad before I came back to Luceti. I had to learn to make new friends when I went, or it would have been lonely.

I have never seen a play either, but I have read several. The plays in the library by a man named Shakespeare, are very interesting.

[Last week...yeah, she knows. She knows full well how tough that week was. Norma rubs her face, grumbling under her breath about Grune and a bunch of snooty kids and how they're not running a foster home or whatever. Seems like Mia had it loads worse though, if she wound up in the hospital.]

A fire?! Jeez, Mimi... I'm glad you're okay, but take it easy from now on, okay? How'd a fire break out anyway? Was it those ding-dongs?
